Rahab the Prostitute

Likewise, was not Rahab the prostitute also justified by works when she welcomed the messengers and sent them out by another road? For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is also dead. (James 2:25-26)

So, just who was this “Rahab, the prostitute” that the Apostle James is talking about in the same paragraph as the patriarch Abraham? These two figures from the Old Testament–Abraham and Rahab–are the two most important people that St. James can cite as examples of his point about the necessity of faith-works going together. Rahab must have been quite someone to rank up there with Abraham.

In the book of Joshua, chapters 2 and 6, we are told the story of the spies Joshua sends into the city of Jericho before the Hebrews attacked it. Rahab, a prostitute, hid the spies and made a deal: the Israelite army would spare her and her family when they attacked and massacred the city. Joshua agreed to this. After the city of Jericho was attacked and Rahab’s family spared, she is said to have become the great-great-grandmother of King David; thus, Rahab is an ancestor of Christ.

Although her status as a sex worker might make us think Rahab a person outside the Kingdom of God, it is her action based on her faith in the God of Israel which saves her–and the people of Israel and eventually the world as her bravery and foresight make the Incarnation possible. Her response to God is just as important as Abraham’s — both of them were necessary to save the world.

Early Christian teachers and preachers frequently mentioned Rahab as a woman who demonstrated many virtues (faith, hospitality, repentance) as well as a model for Christians living “in the world” and as a harbinger of salvation. Read more about these sermons here.

In the mosaic above, we see the visit of the “prince of the host of the Lord” to Joshua before the conquest of Jericho (Joshua 5:13-15). That he is an angel is indicated by a halo rather than wings, and his military garb expresses his role as leader of a host. In the text he has a “drawn sword,” but here it is a labarum such as the archangel Michael carries in Byzantine icons.

Seeing this person, Joshua “fell on his face to the ground.” In the mosaic we see only the beginning of this movement.

Sant’Apollinare in Ravenna & the Magi

St. Apollinaire was a Syrian, elected to be the first bishop of Ravenna (which was later the Byzantine capital of Italy). As the first bishop of Ravenna, he faced nearly constant persecution. He and his flock were exiled from Ravenna during the persecutions of Emperor Vespasian (or Nero, depending on the source). On his way out of the city he was identified, arrested as being the bishop, tortured and martyred by being run through with a sword. 

The church of San Apollinaire in Ravenna is a masterpiece, a jewel of Byzantine iconography and mosaics. It was erected by the Ostrogothic king Theodoric the Great during the first quarter of the 6th century. It was re-consecrated in AD 561, under the rule of the Byzantine emperor Justinian I, Justinian and his wife, the empress Theodora, appear in the mosaics of the church, each leading a segment of the offertory procession towards the altar during the celebration of the Eucharist.

The mosaics also depict a procession of the wise virgin-martyrs, led by the Three Magi, moving towards the group of the Madonna and Child surrounded by four angels. (The Magi in this mosaic are named Balthasar, Melchior and Gaspar; this is thought to be the earliest example of these three names being assigned to the Magi in Christian art.)  The Magi are wearing trousers and Phrygian caps as a sign of their foreign origin. The gifts which the Magi and the wise virgins bring are reflections of the gifts which the congregation are bringing to present: bread, wine, water for the celebration of the Eucharist and food or clothes to be distributed among the poor and needy during the week.

The celebration of the Eucharist was often seen as a procession or pilgrimage in which the parish journeyed from earth to the Kingdom of God and then returned to earth to minister during the week what they had received on Sunday. During the celebration, the parish stepped outside time to stand alongside the Magi, the priest-king Melchizedek, Abraham and Isaac—all of whom also appear in the mosaics of this church—with the saints and martyrs of all times and places to worship God in eternity (as described in the Epistle to the Hebrews and the Book of Revelation, which are the first liturgical commentaries). The offertory procession is a visual shorthand to refer to the entire celebration.


The Magi were consistently venerated as the first non-Jews to come and worship Christ so they were considered the patron saints of all Christians of Gentile backgrounds. A shrine of the Three Kings at Cologne Cathedral, according to tradition, contains the bones of the Magi. Reputedly they were first discovered by Saint Helena on her famous pilgrimage to Palestine and the Holy Lands. The remains were first kept in the church of Hagia Sophia in Constantinople; they were later moved to Milan before being sent to their current resting place by the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick I in 1164.

What prompts these thoughts about Ravenna, St. Apollinaire, and the Magi? The martyrdom of the saint and the translation of the relics of the Magi to Cologne are both commemorated on the same day (July 23).

Nimrod

The constellation Orion, also identified in some folkloric traditions as Nimrod, is seen most clearly in the night skies of the northern hemisphere from January-March each year. Also, with the approach of Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent, Nimrod appears in classical Christian hymnography and sermons as one of the archetypal images of opposition and rebellion against God.

In Hebrew and Christian tradition, Nimrod is considered the leader of those who built the Tower of Babel in the land of Shinar, though the Bible never actually states this. (The illumination above shows Nimrod supervising the construction of the Tower of Babel in the lower left corner.) Nimrod’s kingdom included the cities of Babel, Erech, Accad, and Calneh, all in Shinar. (Genesis 10:10) Therefore it was likely under his direction that the building of Babel and its tower began; in addition to Flavius Josephus, this is also the view found in the Talmud and later midrash such as Genesis Rabba. Several of these early Judaic sources also assert that the king Amraphel, who wars with Abraham later in Genesis, is none other than Nimrod himself.

Judaic interpreters as early as Philo and Yochanan ben Zakai (1st century AD) interpreted “a mighty hunter before the Lord” (Heb. : לפני יהוה, lit. “in the face of the Lord”) as signifying “in opposition to the Lord.” Some rabbinic commentators have also connected the name Nimrod with a Hebrew word meaning ‘rebel’.

The historian Josephus wrote:

Now it was Nimrod who excited them to such an affront and contempt of God. He was the grandson of Ham, the son of Noah, a bold man, and of great strength of hand. He persuaded them not to ascribe it to God, as if it were through his means they were happy, but to believe that it was their own courage which procured that happiness. He also gradually changed the government into tyranny, seeing no other way of turning men from the fear of God, but to bring them into a constant dependence on his power. He also said he would be revenged on God, if he should have a mind to drown the world again; for that he would build a tower too high for the waters to reach. And that he would avenge himself on God for destroying their forefathers.

Now the multitude were very ready to follow the determination of Nimrod, and to esteem it a piece of cowardice to submit to God; and they built a tower, neither sparing any pains, nor being in any degree negligent about the work: and, by reason of the multitude of hands employed in it, it grew very high, sooner than any one could expect; but the thickness of it was so great, and it was so strongly built, that thereby its great height seemed, upon the view, to be less than it really was. It was built of burnt brick, cemented together with mortar, made of bitumen, that it might not be liable to admit water. When God saw that they acted so madly, he did not resolve to destroy them utterly, since they were not grown wiser by the destruction of the former sinners; but he caused a tumult among them, by producing in them diverse languages, and causing that, through the multitude of those languages, they should not be able to understand one another. The place wherein they built the tower is now called Babylon, because of the confusion of that language which they readily understood before; for the Hebrews mean by the word Babel, confusion …

Nimrod, the great hunter, is also said to hunt the newborn Abraham and attempt to slay him, much as Herod slew the infant boys of Bethlehem in an attempt to slay the infant Christ. Nimrod has thus remained in both Jewish and Islamic tradition an emblematic evil person, an archetype of an idolater and a tyrannical king, and often called “Nimrod the Evil.”
